Professor of the Department of Turkology Dr. S.Zh.Tazhibaeva from March 1 to 17, 2017 was in the United States on a research trip. She participated in the 5th International Conference on Documentation and Language Conservation. The conference had been conducted at Manoa University at Honolulu, Hawaii, US. The program of the scientific conference was broad and reflected the main directions of scientific activity of linguists in documenting endangered languages and their revitalization. Researchers from universities in the US, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Switzerland, Germany, Kazakhstan attended the conference

Professor S.Zh. Tazhibayeva and professor of Frankfurt University Dr. I.A. Nevskaya lectured on “Sociolinguistic survey and documentation of endangered Turkish varieties in Kazakhstan”. The research topic of the lecture was devoted to the problems of documentation of endangered varieties of Turkish spoken in Kazakhstan and sociolinguistic situation of Turkish ethnic groups deported to Kazakhstan in 1944. The participants of the conference had been interested in the topic of the research with respect to the problems of the language situation in Kazakhstan, endangered variants of the Turkish language and their conservation. The database storage and visualization aroused the interest of the scientific community.



Within the framework of the 5th International Conference “Documentation and Language Conservation. Vital Voices. Linking Language and Wellbeing“ different seminars, round table had been organized. They were devoted to the application of innovative technologies in modern linguistic research on language documentation and revitalization “Computational methods for Endangered Languages”, “Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics Curriculum as a Lens for Language and Culture Revitalization” as well as “Language Surveys and Wellbeing”, “Interdisciplinarity in Language and Wellness” etc.

Manoa University, Honolulu, Hawaii has a strong academic tradition of language documentation. They have a special master’s program on language documentation and conservation. The conference at the US university in Honolulu attracted many researchers from different universities of Kanada, Japan, New Zealand Australia, Switzerland, Germany, Kazakhstan and gave a possibility to establishing scientific contacts for collaboration in future projects.
