Sanako: innovative educational technology for foreign language lecturers

On February 18, 2021, the offline training seminar was organized for the teaching staff of the Foreign Languages Department, the Faculty of International Relations, L.N. Gumilyov ENU. The seminar was on the application of Finnish innovative educational technology Sanako in foreign language classes. The speaker was Leonid Kuzmin, Vice Technical Director of Polymedia LLP (Kazakhstan).  

The multimedia language lab of the Foreign Languages Department ​​is equipped with new educational appliance from the Finnish company "Sanako", which produces educational technologies to improve the languages teaching ​​in educational institutions. The Sanako hardware and software complex allows increase the time each student spends speaking and actively practicing during classes, and improve the quality of teaching foreign languages ​​in online and classroom activities.

The lecturers of our department are open to the modern international trends in the field of teaching foreign languages. They apply innovative educational technologies of blended learning, virtual leaning, content and language integrated learning (CLIL) and digital visualization.

Among the key priority areas of the department are professional development and training of the teaching staff. During the world pandemic our teaching staff passed advanced professional development courses at the international level, including:

-        the international advanced training courses "Innovative Educational Technologies and Didactic Models", organized under the Erasmus project from April 6 to 19, 2020.

-        the professional development courses at the Institute for professional development and additional education of L.N. Gumilyov ENU on the topic: "Digital skills of a modern lecturer in the context of distance learning" from 5 to 25 August 2020.

-        the online courses on the methodology of teaching French as a foreign language, organized by the Embassy of France to the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Embassy of France to Uzbekistan and the French Alliance in Nur-Sultan from October 13 to November 17, 2020.

-        the online methodological seminar "Up-to-date Resources for Key Language Skills Development" by "InterPress Distribution" - the official distributor of the world publishing house Oxford University Press in Kazakhstan. Trainer - Paul Woodfall, International Lecturer of Oxford University Press, February 15, 2021. It is worth noting that senior lecturer of the Foreign Languages Department Saliyeva D.O. participated in the contest among the lecturers and won the prize of Oxford University Press.

The Sanako hardware and software complex will apparently become an integral tool for the development of student language skills, and it also will provide ample opportunities for teaching and practicing simultaneous and consecutive translation.
