International Online Foreign Languages Olympiad Held by the Faculty of International Relations

March 17, 2023, an annual international Olympiad in foreign languages (English, German and French) was held among students of non-linguistic specialties at the Department of Foreign Languages, Faculty of International Relations, L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University.

The purpose of the event is to support the idea of multilingualism, increase motivation for learning foreign languages and expand the socio-cultural, linguistic, cultural and intercultural competence of students.

The event kicked off with a solemn opening ceremony headed by S. B. Makysh, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, M. M. Kosybaev, Dean of the Faculty of International, and L. K. Meyrambekova,  Head of the Department of Foreign Languages. They pointed out that in today's deepening globalization process, communication and cooperation are becoming more and more important to everyone and every country. And, without a doubt, knowledge of foreign languages and the ability to overcome language barriers are the most important conditions for developing and strengthening these connections. Knowledge of a foreign language opens up new horizons for us. It becomes a key to the world of another culture, helping not only to recognize and understand its representatives, but also to re-examine oneself. They also emphasized the importance of holding such events as an excellent platform for the exchange of knowledge and skills among students, as well as an opportunity to demonstrate their high level of foreign language proficiency.

The Olympiad was held online, which allows for a wider geographic reach of event participants and provides opportunities for students from other countries to participate. More than 140 students from 16 universities in 4 countries participated.

Among them are partner universities of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University. There were students from the Northeastern Federal University named after M.K. Amosov University (Russia), Kiev National University of Technology and Design (Ukraine), Tashkent State Pedagogical University named after Nizami (Uzbekistan), Osh State University of the International University of Kyrgyzstan, Kyrgyz National University named after Zhusup Balasagyn (Kyrgyzstan), Nukus State Pedagogical Institute (Uzbekistan), and from Ajiniyaz Pedagogical Institute (Uzbekistan).

A number of universities from Kazakhstan participated in the Olympiad: Karaganda National University named after E.A. Buketov, Karaganda Kazpotrebsoyuz State University, State University named after Shakarim (Semey), Pavlodar State University named after S. Toraigyrov, Alikhan Bokeikhan University (Semey), Pavlodar University of Education named after Alkey Margulan, Kokshetau University named after Sh. Ualikhanov, Astana International University (Astana), Turan-Astana University (Astana), M.S. Narikbaev KAZGUU University (Astana), S. Seifullin Kazakh Agrotechnical University (Astana),  Kazakh University of Economics, Finance and International Trade (Astana), Eurasian Institute of Humanities (Astana).

The first-year non-language major students participated in the English Olympiad, and the second-year non-language major students participated in the German and French Olympiad.

The Olympiad consisted of two stages: I round - listening; second round - speaking on the proposed topic.

The right to participate in the second round, that is the final round of the Olympiad, was given to those who have achieved more than 75% of the correct answers in the first round of individual tests.

The jury members noted the high level of training that all Olympiad entrants received.
