Department of International Relations

History of the Department of International Relations dates back to 1998, when the first intake of students in “International Relations” specialty was carried out at the Faculty of History and International Relations. The first Head of the Department of Political Science, Sociology and International Relations was Murat Abdirov, Doctor of Historical Science, Professor.

In 2001, the Department of International Relations was established at the Faculty of International Relations of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University.

In 2003, the first specialists were graduated from the Department of International Relations. They currently work in foreign structures, divisions and departments of ministries, higher educational institutions of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

From 2009 till 2014, the Head of the Department of International Relations was Raushan Yelmurzaeva, Doctor of Political Science, Professor.

From 2014 till 2017, Head of the Department was a Candidate of Political Science, Acting Associate Professor Dana Akhmedyanova.

From 2017 till 2019, Head of the Department was a Candidate of Historical Science, Acting Professor Aiman Azmukhanova.

From 2019 to the present, Head of the Department is a Candidate of Political Science, Acting Associate Professor Dana Akhmedyanova.

In 1998, the Department introduced teaching in foreign languages: elective disciplines were taught in English, French and German. From 2011-2012, teaching in English expanded to the most of the general obligatory disciplines including elective and core disciplines in International Relations.

In 2008, “6M0202 - International Relations” (now “6M020200 – International Relations”) Master’s degree program was launched at the Department within frames of the AA №0000002 license, issued by the Ministry of Education and Sciense of the RoK on May 18, 2004. Graduates obtain “Master of Arts” academic degree in “6M020200 – International Relations”.

 On February 3, 2010, “6D020200 – International Relations”PhD degree program was launched at the Department in frames of the №АB 0137427 license. Graduates obtain Doctor of Philosophy academic degree in “6D020200 – International Relations”. In 2014, the degree program was accredited by the Independent Kazakh Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (IQAA).

In 2012, bachelor and master’s (both scientific-pedagogical and professional directions) degree programs in “International Relations” were accredited by the Accreditation, Certification and Quality Assurance Institute (ACQUIN).

Since 2011, the Department of International Relations of the L.N. Gumilyov ENU implements two double-degree master’s programs in the framework of Network University of the Commonwealth of Independent States (together with the RUDN and MGIMO Universities).
