Japanese traditional narrative art “Rakugo”

On March 30th at L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University was held an event, in which the audience was introduced to the traditional theater and literary genre of Japanese culture - “Rakugo”. The event was attended by the staff of Japanese Embassy in the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Dean, professors, instructors and students of the Faculty of International Relations. Special guests were representatives of the comedy theater Kanariya.

It is said, that Rakugo is a form of comedy that uses stories with humorous punchlines, which was existed for over 400 years. Starting from the Edo period, comedy halls were called “Yose”, and they were created to host Rakugo. However, today it is been known as simple and familiar comedy style that permeates modern Japanese society. The theater, was founded by Mr. Kanariya, is famous not only in the origin country, but also in overseas. This time they came to Kazakhstan by the invitation of the Embassy of Japan in Kazakhstan. This event was organized by the Embassy in association with the Department of Oriental Studies.

Before kicking off the performance, promoter of English version of Rakugo theater, Mr. Kanariya gave a welcoming speech and introduced the rest of the theater members. After Rakugo show, they also performed traditional Japanese songs and dances.

At the end, the audience expressed their deepest gratitude to the guests from Japan and took photos with the troupe. The Department of Oriental Studies always pays special attention to cooperation with Embassies of the studied Oriental countries. Thus, it is facilitating the spread of the Eastern cultures all around the country. We are looking forward for the further and closer cooperation with the Embassy of Japan.
